Charlie Rivera
Main article: Charlie Rivera and Reina Rivera
Reina recognized and documented Charlie’s recurring childhood vomiting, motion sickness, fatigue, fainting, and light sensitivity from early childhood. Severe vomiting and inability to maintain adequate intake brought repeated emergency visits and several hospital admissions for IV hydration, electrolyte stabilization, and acute nutritional care; Charlie remained chronically underweight between crises. Juan initially minimized the symptoms, then gradually came to understand their severity and joined her in documenting them, seeking medical care, adapting family life, and actively supporting Charlie. Clinicians still treated each crisis in isolation and failed to explain the larger pattern for years.
Medical professionals sometimes treated Reina’s Spanish accent and use of Spanish as reasons to discount her observations. Reina continued advocating for Charlie and used both Spanish and English while managing his care.
Samuel Rivera
Samuel was Reina and Juan’s younger son. During Charlie’s 2023 hospitalization, Reina remained at the hospital while Juan stayed home with Samuel.
Chosen Family
Reina extended maternal care to members of Charlie’s chosen family. She treated Logan Weston as family and comforted Peter Liu after Charlie’s suicide attempt.
Cultural Identity and Communication
Reina was Puerto Rican and spoke Spanish as her native language. She was fluent in English and spoke it with an accent. The Rivera household in Jackson Heights was bilingual, and Reina used both languages with her family.
